To create these 3D prints, I used MRI images that depict a rotation of my heart and aorta (right). After inverting the images, I put them into the Rhino program. I then made a heightfield of those images (where the image is light, the heightfield is higher) so that when up against light, the finalized pieces resemble the MRI pictures (far right).
The pieces were all printed using PLA clear plastic using a RepRap 3D printer. The plastic is made from corn, and is meant to biodegrade, thus increasing the similarity between the final prints and the organic forms from which they originated.
